Augmented Reality Personalized Video Gift Cards

By Greg Jones

Sorry this post is a little late for the occasion (Father’s day), but I had to give The Home Depot a quick nod for coming up with yet another great application of AR for gift cards. Last year during the holiday season The Home Depot released 3D gift cards. This year they’ve taken the concept and made it a little more personal.

Buy a gift card in store, upload or record a video message, and then give the gift! The recipient can watch their video online through their webcam. In AR fashion, the gift card becomes the video screen. Take a look below, and hopefully I catch the next application like this before the holiday has past!

Projection Mapping Techniques

By Greg Jones

Projection mapping has come a long way in a relatively small period of time. It stimulates the senses, breaks the convention of 2D displays, and frees video from expensive screens and places them on everyday objects. The technique has been used in installations, experimental films and is starting to appear in advertising.

Projector Calibration

Johnny Chung Lee’s Automatic Projector Calibration thesis work focused on fitting a projected image perfectly onto a moveable target without distorting the image. He accomplished this by embedding light sensors into portable displays to allow the projector’s calibration cycle to recognize the boundaries of the display. His thesis went further to state that if we combine visible light and infrared light in one projector, we can create a single calibration-free device which is able to perform invisible location tracking to match projected light to any surface at any angle.

In his words, “Embedding light sensors to enable automatic projector calibration allows us to rethink projection technology.” Pretty cool stuff.

Light Installation

Projection mapping in installations has the unique advantage that the geometry of the space can be precisely controlled and mapped to. Using projectors to project colored light onto white surfaces in a dark room can have a tremendous impact. When every angle and every corner has been mapped, light installations have the ability to transform every surface of complex objects into video displays. A great example of this is Envision – Step into the sensory box.

Bing Maps Brings Crowd-sourcing to a New Level

By Greg Jones

I remember when MapQuest was the place to go to print directions to get from point A to point B. The maps were rudimentary at best. Then Google Maps came along and opened my eyes to our world, no longer a map, but a living, breathing series of satellite and camera images, seamlessly stitched together and wrapped around the globe. Mapping started to shift from an exercise in measurement and direction and took on the role of geo-located photo journalism. Google Streetview became a digital record of every alleged car burglary, killer seagull, and crazy stuffed animal house that existed as the Google car drove by. Who knew our world could be so interesting?

Amidst a growing storm of privacy concerns with mapping, Bing has begun to take it to the next level. Read This Post
