Google Realtime – Google Updates

By Greg Jones

The Real time web has recently taken a giant leap forward. Before, if you wanted to find breaking news you had to subscribe to the feeds you thought would bring you that news. Now, Google has introduced real time search right in their search engine.

This allows your search query about earthquakes to bring up the Wikipedia entry first when using the default search, but by switching to “Updates” on the left-hand side bar, it pulls in the most recent tweets, status updates, blog posts, etc on the query. This allows a user to search more intelligently on a query, and provides individuals as well as companies to keep up with what the entire web is talking about at that moment in time.

Here is a video explaining Google Realtime:

Flipboard Turns iPad into Social Magazine

By Greg Jones

I never thought I’d say this, but I kind of want an iPad. Why? One App which was recently released makes so much sense that it has single-handedly changed my perception of what being socially active on the web should be.

Flipboard is the App, and it promises to unify all of your social media consumption and interaction in one place. Flipboard pulls all of your friend’s tweets, Facebook posts, etc into a digital magazine where you can view thumbnails of and click to read full articles of everything your social circle is linking to online.

The app has a very natural “flip” gesture to turn pages and navigate, but better yet, it allows you to comment back on anything your friends are posting, all from one place. It makes so much sense it’s surprising it took so long for someone to make our lives a bit easier!

What would show up on your Flipboard? How would you apply this app to your business?

YouTube Leanback and Google TV to Transform Online Video

By Greg Jones

YouTube just introduced a new way to view online video with YouTube Leanback. Log in to YouTube and visit youtube.com/leanback to start the show.

Leanback is personalized based on your profile, feeding you videos from your subscriptions and friends in real time. It even connects with facebook and allows you to watch the same videos your friends are watching. The concept frees video from the webpage, allowing a more seamless video-watching experience on your home entertainment system. Only the arrow keys and the enter key are used to navigate and select.

YouTube Leanback functions on your home PC, but its true potential comes when it is used with Google TV. Google TV is being incorporated into many new TVs and allows you to watch internet TV anywhere. It delivers full screen video in high-def and eliminates the need to watch video on a computer.

Looks like everyone can dust off that home entertainment system after all!
